Commendation
Jian Wai SOHO, Beijing (China)
Architect: Riken Yamamoto & Field Shop, Yokohama (Japan)
Developer: ESoho China Ltd., Beijing (China)
The "Jian Wai SOHO" project is being given a commendation in
recognition of its innovative typology, which goes well beyond the
customary Beijing block.
Instead of a standalone high-rise, 15 individual buildings of up to
100 meter are deployed that together create an entire, highly dense
quarter. The facades are restrained and given a homogeneous look.
Deep footprints that vary greatly in typology allow for a broad variety
of residential, office and mixed usages.
A three-storey base section joins forces with the lower storeys, which
are illuminated by light-filled courtyards and the "sunken gardens" as
well as absorbing parked cars, to form an incisive public space that is
well structured by the staggered layout of the high-rises.
