What the jury appreciates about the scheme in Chengdu by Steven Holl Architects ist the intelligence with which the designers have used a massively urban form to create a protected public space in the middle of a very busy, chaotic metropolis. At the same time it ist not cut from the city, it is not a fortress, there are five links to the urban fabric that ensure that also passersby can benefit from the beauty of this public space. The project is an amazing prototype for the high-density developments of the current China right now.
